Why concrete scales with de-icing salt
Short answer
Salt does not chemically eat concrete. It pulls in more water and lowers the freezing point, so the concrete freezes and thaws more often, and closer to the surface. That repeated cycle is what pops the scale off. Reducing absorbed water directly reduces the mechanism.
What is the mechanism, exactly?
Concrete is porous. It drinks meltwater, and a salt solution is harder to shed than clean water. By lowering the freezing point, salt makes the surface cross the freeze threshold more often in the same winter.
Every crossing turns pore water into ice, which takes up more volume and pushes from the inside. The first few millimetres give first, because that is where salt concentration and cycle count are highest. That is why scaling is a surface defect and not a deep crack.
What does the literature measure?
Silane and siloxane water repellents are studied for exactly this question. Li, Fan, Lv and Fan (2020) deals directly with hydrophobic treatments and salt-frost resistance.
The size of the effect comes from water absorption itself. A 2024 review in the Journal of Materials Science reports consistent 70 to 95 % reductions in water absorption for treated cementitious materials. Less water in the pores means less ice at every freeze.
Real performance depends on the concrete, its porosity and the quality of the application. These are literature results on the product class, not a test on your slab.
What has to happen before treating?
Clean it and let it dry. Concrete still saturated cannot take the treatment up, and dirty concrete makes the product work on the dirt.
If the slab is already scaling deeply, the treatment does not glue back what has gone. It protects what remains. Treating early, on concrete still sound, returns far more than treating a surface already open.
Why does breathability matter on a slab?
Because an exterior slab has to be able to dry upward. A film-forming product that seals the surface can trap moisture under the film, and the film eventually lifts, taking laitance with it.
A penetrating repellent lines the pores without plugging them. Vapour keeps escaping, and that permeability is quantified by ASTM E96.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it repair a slab that already scaled?
- No. The treatment protects the concrete that remains, it does not rebuild the surface that has gone. For a badly damaged slab the question is resurfacing, not a repellent.
- Can I still use salt afterwards?
- The treatment reduces the water and salt solution absorbed, it does not make concrete indifferent to salt. Less salt is still better for an exterior slab.
- How much product does a double driveway take?
- One 19 L pail covers 1,000 to 1,200 sq ft in two coats, which comfortably covers a typical double driveway. The calculator gives the exact count.
