Why asphalt shingles age
Short answer
Three things wear a shingle: UV, which degrades the bituminous binder; water, which enters the material and freezes; and thermal cycling, which works the material. In Quebec all three arrive together, which is why a roof here ages faster than one in a mild climate.
What does UV do to a shingle?
Ultraviolet radiation degrades the bituminous binder that holds the shingle together. The material hardens, goes brittle and loses its flexibility, which eventually sheds the surface granules.
This is established enough to have its own accelerated test method: ASTM G154 exposes materials to UVA-340 lamps and condensation cycles to simulate solar exposure. Recent work on UV aging of asphalt mixtures documents the associated performance loss.
What does water add to the problem?
Water absorbed by a porous material freezes, gains volume and pushes from the inside. A shingle already weakened by UV takes that mechanical work worse than a new one.
The two mechanisms reinforce each other: UV opens the material, open material drinks more water, and freezing water opens it further.
Why does the Quebec climate speed this up?
Because it stacks all three stresses. A summer that hits hard on UV, a winter that multiplies sub-zero crossings, and sharp day-night swings in the shoulder seasons.
The number of freeze-thaw cycles matters more than absolute cold. A region that oscillates around the freezing point works a roof harder than one that is simply very cold and stable.
What can be slowed, and what cannot?
You can act on absorbed water and on the surface’s UV exposure. That is exactly what a high-UV-resistance water repellent does: less water in the material, and a screen against the radiation.
You cannot rejuvenate a binder already degraded, or make a brittle shingle flexible again. The treatment is preventive. On a roof still sound it works; on a roof at the end of its run it arrives too late.

- Do south-facing slopes age faster?
- They take more radiation, so binder degradation is generally further along there. That is often where the first signs show.
- Can a treatment be applied too late?
- Yes. On a brittle shingle shedding granules, surface water is no longer the problem. At that stage the honest answer is replacement.
